Where is This Smoke Coming From?
Here we are in near the end of Summer and we are experiencing massive amounts of smoke in the air. Here in Yakima the air quality has now reached Very Unhealthy and valley at Hazardous. I suffer from allergies and this smoke has me feeling headaches and some lightheaded.
The smoke is coming from northerly winds from smoke from wildfires across northern parts of Washington state and southern British Columbia that has blown into the Columbia River basin and surrounding valleys. On Sunday, the air quality in Yakima was at Very Unhealthy and the lower valley was at Hazardous; according to Yakima Herald, reporting dangerously high levels of ultrafine "PM 2.5" particulate pollution.
It is recommended that if you suffer with heart or lung disease, respiratory problems, diabetes or are the elderly, pregnant women, and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion, and limit their time outdoors.
Smoke is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fine particles produced when wood burns. The biggest health threat from smoke is from fine particles, which can penetrate deep into your lungs and cause a range of health problems. Click here to read more
Smoke can cause coughing, scratchy throat, irritated sinuses, shortness of breath, chest pain, headaches, stinging eyes, and runny nose. (Remember that when smoke levels are high, even healthy people can be affected).
If you are experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pains or overall ill feelings, please see your health care provider right away.
It is recommended to use a mask if outdoors; Mask that covers the the nose and mouth such as the N95. See image on right side. You can also call your clinic or local Fire Department for assistance.
